The ECLC programme has been founded to enable European students to learn Chinese in a Chinese environment, as well as to establish a platform for academic exchange. Undergraduate and graduate students from Europe can advance their studies in Chinese, while Peking University researchers are able to stay at European universities to teach and do research.

Founding members of the ECLC programme are the Department of Chinese Studies of the University of Würzburg, the Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Vienna, and the School of International Studies at Peking University.

In 2014 the Department of Global Studies of Aarhus University joined the ECLC-programme. In 2015 the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages of the University of Oslo joined the programme. The University of Vienna quit the ECLC programme in 2016.

Department of Chinese Studies, University of Würzburg

The University of Würzburg was founded in 1402 and has about 25,000 students enrolled. It is located in Würzburg, in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany, about 100 km south east of Frankfurt. The University of Würzburg's Sinology was founded in 1965, and offers a variety of major and minor subjects. Since 2002 the degree of a Bachelor of Arts for Modern China can be achieved at Würzburg, the first accredited Bachelor programme of its kind in Germany. Since 2007, this programme has been complemented by a newly established Master of Arts in Chinese Studies. Furthermore, the Department of Chinese Studies cooperates with the Faculty of Economics and offers two MA programmes, China Business and Economics and Chinese and Ecnomics, and a course Chinese for Economists. Chinese language as a minor subject is also offered. Since 2002, the Department of Chinese Studies has cooperated with Peking University.

Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University

Aarhus University was founded in 1928, and has about 44,000 students. It is located in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. The first degree course in Chinese was established in the late 1960s, and today the university offers Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programmes in China Studies with an emphasis on modern culture and society. Since 2012, a double degree Master's programem has been offered in collaboration with Zhejiang University. China Studies cooperates with Japan Studies and South Asian Studies in also offering an MA programme in Asian Studies. China Studies is part of the Department for Global Studies at the School of Culture and Society.

Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at University of Olso

The University of Oslo was founded in 1811 as the first university in Norway. Chinese studies (sinology) was established in Oslo in 1966, today offering Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes in China Studies. Ca. 50 new Bachelor students are recruited each fall semester. Currently more than one hundred students are enrolled in China studies at all levels.

School of International Studies, Peking University

Peking University was founded as the Imperial University of Peking in 1898. It is the first modern national university of China, and today has about 30,000 students. The School of International Studies (SIS) was founded in 1996, although its history can be traced back to the 1960s, when the Department of Political Science was set up at Peking University. The SIS is organized in three departments and three institutes, hosts more than twenty research centres, and currently offers three B.A., seven M.A., and five Ph.D. programmes.
